A Survey of Hospital-based Employee Health Services

Perry Meyer, Principal Investigator, Senior Vice President, Iowa Hospital Association.
Other investigators from the Iowa Hospital Association include Kara Staiert, the Director of Information Support Services, and Dustin Wagner, the Director of Financial Services.

Abstract provided by PI, The importance of employment-based health protection (traditional occupational health and safety services) and health promotion (workplace wellness services) have been the subject of two major Institute of Medicine [IOM] reports. In order to assess the extent to which Iowa Hospital Association [IHA] member hospitals have adopted elements of a fully integrated employee health program, we propose a survey of all IHA hospitals. The electronic survey—based on the 2005 IOM Employee Total Health Management Model—will be developed in partnership with the UI Healthier Workforce Center for Excellence [HWCE] and conducted in the fall of 2012. Survey results will be used by the HWCE to develop one of its technical reports and for a paper to be submitted in the peer reviewed employee health literature, both of which will be developed collaboratively and co-authored with the IHA.

Employer Wellness and Prevention Programs in PPACA Exchanges and Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (CO-OP) Programs

Arlinda McKeen, Principal Investigator, President of the State Public Policy Group, Inc. (SPPG)
Other SPPG investigators include Michelle Rich, Senior Program Manager, and Erin Davision-Rippey, Program Manager.

Abstract provided by PI, The results of this research and analysis will inform development of a prevention and wellness module as a model for Iowa health exchange and CO-OP plans offered for small to medium sized businesses.  SPPG will conduct secondary research into: 1) requirements of the PPACA relating to wellness and prevention initiatives tied to employers, 2) a review of summary papers related to prevention, wellness, and state-developed exchanges and CO-OPs, 3) a review of the status of Iowa’s exchange and CO-OP development, and 4) a review of the status of other key states which may provide useful information for Iowa’s development. A summary report of these findings will be a stand-alone product. SPPG will work closely with HWCE in applying the findings of the secondary research to develop a wellness and prevention module for small- and medium-sized businesses for CO-OP and Exchange plans.
