Interest in social determinants of health as a major contributor to overall health status has dramatically increased in the past two years. Recent research has focused on financial barriers to healthcare access, particularly for low-wage employees in high deductible health plans. Intriguingly, the data also indicate that low-wage earners are less engaged in employer wellness programs. If this is indeed the case, what do employers and wellness program vendors need to do to capture the attention of these individuals? What are the implications of these findings in relation to employer healthcare cost-containment goals? If these trends are pervasive, what can employers do to promote greater engagement among this population? This session will provide a review of our current understanding of the issues, and include a discussion of potential solutions.
